Venue Detail

Join us for an exploration into what it means to value contributions and empower the commons as a global community.

We will hear from pioneers working to digitalise public goods and develop new ways to recognise and reward contributors, then collectively value contributions to the commons through a live demonstration of the WISDOM framework.

  • 15:00-15:30 - Digitalising Public Goods (Dr Daniela Gandorfer, Zulaikha Ayub)

  • 15:30-16:00 - WISDOM: An Open Science Framework for Collective Valuation (Dr Cooper Smout)

  • 16:00-17:00 - Collective Re-Valuation with WISDOM

If you’ve ever felt that the modern concept of ‘value’ is insufficient or that there is no place for ‘externalities’ in a closed system, we invite you to join us in re-imagining how we value contributions and measure them as a global collective.

Session details:

15:00 - Digitalising Public Goods (Dr Daniela Gandorfer, Zulaikha Ayub)

Daniela and Zulaikha will introduce their work at Logische Phantasie Lab (LoPh), a non-profit working at the intersection of climate change and digital technologies, with a focus on decentralized justice and governance. We’ll explore the award-winning “Decentralized Right to Breathe" initiative, then highlight some of the successes and challenges with digitalising and valuing public goods.

15:30 - WISDOM: An Open Science Framework for Collective Valuation (Dr Cooper Smout)

Cooper will introduce his work at Open Heart + Mind (OHM) to develop WISDOM, a radically inclusive value accounting framework for diverse communities. He’ll show how the model empowers communities to define their own values and measure the relative value of diverse contributions, sharing data from arts and science communities to demonstrate the model’s versatility and capacity to connect communities through common metrics.

16:00 - Collective Re-Valuation with WISDOM

In the final part, we’ll explore the WISDOM framework by live application to the LoPh project. We’ll identify values and contributions we want to recognise, then enter these into the WISDOM prototype and submit them for open peer-review by everyone in the room. We’ll explore the standardised metrics this produces us and discuss strengths and limitations of the process.

Participants will also be able to 'play along’ through this process with respect to their own projects or communities. If you’d like to do so, please bring a laptop and a sample of project contributions that you’d like to recognise (e.g., ideas, actions, or resources).

We’ll close with a round of reflections on the process and discussion of next steps.
