Last and First Men
Join me for a showing of a transportive, meditative, otherworldly exploration of 18 distinct human species in a short 72 minutes. Accompanied by narration of Tilda Swinton, beautiful brutalist Soviet-era black and white cinematography, and music of Jóhann Jóhannsson (of Arrival, Prisoners, Sicario fame).
Followed by a sci-fi “nerdout” discussion about future history, repetitive cycles, telepathy, worship of music, and individualist discomforts when it comes to group-mind.
The movie adapts a famous novel by Olaf Stapledon from 1930, which prominent authors Arthur C. Clarke, or H. P. Lovecraft, and scientists alike (John Maynard Smith) proclaimed as one of the most important books they have ever read.

About the original novel
Last and First Men: A Story of the Near and Far Future is a "future history" science fiction novel written in 1930 by the British author Olaf Stapledon. A work of unprecedented scale in the genre, it describes the history of humanity from the present onwards across two billion years and eighteen distinct human species, of which our own is the first.
Among other visionary things the book anticipates the science of genetic engineering, and is an early example of the fictional supermind: a consciousness comprising many telepathically linked individuals.
